Silverstone Classic 2017
One of the best shows of the year
Review by Trev
Overview
This is a fantastic race weekend for classic car racing and is also attended by many clubs showing off their cars. It’s a very large event with lots to see and do, including evening bands. Well worth doing the full weekend and either camping or stopping locally.

Detailed report
Access to Silverstone is excellent and although busy I did not hear many complaints of long queues. We camped and found the campsite very good with good onsite facilities. It is close enough to walk but they have transport running all day and if like us were displaying a car we drove the 5 minutes to site each day.
The campsite is well drained and 2017 demonstrated this with heavy rain each evening.

Silverstone is a big site and you will need the weekend to get around everything. The paddocks at both the National and International pits are open and you can get up real close to the cars and drivers. The free bus service which runs all day and is a jump on/off service gets you around the site and is especially important for getting to the international pits.
Racing runs all day and the great thing is they are quite short races at around 12 laps so you can pick to watch full races and then move to a new site for the next.
Lots to see at the exhibitor’s area with stalls/shops and displays from several companies including restoration and sales.

There is a fair and even a drag strip so plan your journey for each day.
Food is good and the meals are worth the money. The toilets are clean and plentiful along with the general site cleanliness this makes sunny days especially enjoyable.
Silverstone know how to run an event and you will not be disappointed if you go.
For
The club display area and reasonable cost. There are some wonderful old cars to see and listen to and you can get in close.
There are lots to do for a full weekend and food is a reasonable price.
Against
Not a lot.
Attendance
Over 100,000 with 10,000 cars on display and 1000 cars entered for the races.

We attended Silverstone Classic weekend last year and despite camping in torrential (at times) rain, the weekend was simply awesome.
Silverstone are experts at event organisation - they’ve had lots of practice, of course, but that expertise shows on occasions such as the Classic Race meets.

The site has security and they double as marshals for help and guidance on where to camp. Though there was a deluge all weekend, the site dried out quickly.
The toilets and showers were clean and well-maintained - a real plus for camping in a monsoon.
Silverstone puts on a massive show and I’m sure we didn’t get to see everything on offer. A fairground, drifting from Jaguar, drag racing and the classic car racing, with pits open to the public, I’m sure you couldn’t fit much more in, yet they did. An auction of classic cars made for fascinating viewing too!

With the clubs all turned-out in their Sunday best, showing off their members’ vehicles, there was such a lot to see.
Certainly going again!
Certainly going again!
Michelle having a great time in the Jaguar even though they refused to give her a go. |
