TIPEC Northernish Gathering Sunday 15th April 2018
At a different venue from last year’s meet of the same name, and with a little more interest and a slightly bigger car park – and it got filled just as quickly as the one last year!
I went along for the ride, I had no idea where we were going, who was going, or what we were going to do and see when we got there. The TIPEC crowd are a friendly lot and it’s always a well-organised outing – no matter what event it is.

We set off in the Cayenne a little late, but the roads were clear and we managed to make up a little time (not by speeding, of course). We got to Blyth Services on the A1 and met with members from Peterborough, East Mids and Sth Yorks/Nth Notts areas. No time for coffee for us, just a few shouts of ‘Good Morning’ and we were off! Because we have cameras and things and like to try for shots of a line of Porsches stretching off into the distance, we stayed at the back for most of the trip, only passing everyone to get footage of the line of prestige once. I’m not sure how (or even if) that turned out OK.
A little further along the A1 we were joined by another 5 members of TIPEC.
There were a lot of curious drivers pushing their cars just to pass the line of Porsches, some kids even waved.

We arrived at the pub, The Wellington which had a notice on the bar saying they had reserved the place just for us for the morning. The ‘all you could eat’ breakfast was a nice surprise, although I had the pancakes. ‘Proper’ American style pancakes with ‘Maple Syrup’ – not maple syrup at all, it was golden syrup I’m afraid, but the pancakes were delicious.
Because of the reservation of the whole restaurant, we all got seats and had room to spare. A lovely, relaxed breakfast, thank you very much!
When we went outside after breakfast, the car park had filled considerably. Few places left to fit even one of the special Porsches in! A late-arriving Cayman GT4 had to park in a large puddle.

Never mind, we weren’t long before we were off again, into the Yorkshire countryside. We went to Gmund, RPM Porsche and REEP Car Finishing – all on the same industrial estate and all open for the occasion.
We’ve been to visit Gmund before and Andrew Mearns, the owner remembered us – in a crowd of people, that’s not bad going at all, nicely done, Andrew.
Gmund put on snacks and drinks and the showroom was set out for everyone to take a look at. From the unusual 924DP Turbo Cargo (estate-style) through the more ‘usual’ 911 classics and on to the tractors, everything had been polished and primed for display.

Andrew’s daughters were there too and happy to talk ‘shop’. His eldest daughter is an accomplished professional in the world of television and his younger daughter is following Andrew’s love for mechanics. She’s rebuilt her Beetle engine a couple of times at lest and was regaling TIPEC members with her expertise in the field of classic restoration. Andrew’s wife is also an interesting lady. She is a solicitor with leanings towards local government and the district elections. Good Luck with the elections!
RPM Porsche have their workshops just around the corner from Gmund and they have a tidy operation going too. Professionalism is a by-word here, everything is clean, tidy and well-looked after. The people we spoke to were only too happy to help with any questions and I got the feeling that is their policy in their working practice too.
REEP Car Finishing stands at the end of the estate, tucked away in the corner. I listened to a guy telling us about the benefits of wrapping a brand-new car – protecting precious and expensive paintwork is a must, for sure!
The McLaren and two Ferraris looked stunning (of course) and wrapping those cars would seem to be a good financial investment.
We set off for home before most others and covered around 180 miles in all.
Looking forward to next year’s outing for the Northernish Gathering.

We attended this breakfast meet last year and enjoyed the morning drive out.
This year promised to be bigger and better and we were not disappointed.
Using FB, it was organised to meet at different points along the A1. We met with members from Peterborough, East Midlands and South Yorkshire/North Notts at Blyth Services.
When we arrived at Blyth Services, around 12 cars were in the car park and after a short greeting with everyone, we set off. The pace was brisk but we all managed to stick together quite well without upsetting other drivers in the process.
At the services near junction 38 of the A1, another 5 cars from the South Yorkshire group joined onto the back of the convoy and 35 minutes later, we all arrived at The Wellington, Wetherby Rd, Leeds.
The car park was already quite full, but the organisers quickly parked everyone.

The pub provided an ‘all you can eat breakfast’ which was great value, delicious and only £4.50. Also, because they had a notice up on the bar saying the place was closed for that morning because of a prior booking (us), there was plenty of room to eat and chat.
It was not long before people were starting to leave and most, if not all made their way to the next part of the gathering, the open day at Gmund, RPM Porsche and REEP car finishing.
This car park was busy and we had an estimated 90 cars there - double the number that turned out early for breakfast.
Gmund had some smashing cars to look around and welcomed everyone into their workshops and showroom, providing drinks and lunch.
The Gmund team are all excited to show off their work, tell people about future projects and about their own projects.
We then walked around the corner to RPM who were also busy chatting with people and showing off their clean and tidy workshop and small showroom.

Porsches everywhere filled the yard and we had a walk to REEP who had three very nice and very new supercars to show off, a McLaren, and two Ferraris. Great to see their work and chat about what they can do to protect the paint on your new baby.
The weather was good, if not great, and the rain held off until after we arrived home. We covered 180 miles and the route from The Wellington to Gmund was a lovely drive, pulling in some spectacular Yorkshire scenery.
